जब राक्षस तारकासुर ने आतन्क मचा दिया था तब तारकासुर के वध के लिये देवतायो ने कामदेव से विनती की कि वह शिव व पार्वती मे प्रेम बना दे क्योकि तारकासुर को वह वरदान था कि केवल शिव व पार्वती का पुत्र ही तारकासुर का वध कर सकता है। तो कामदेव तथा देवी रति कैलाश पर्वत शिव का ध्यान भन्ग करने के लिये गये पर कामदेव का बाण लगने से शिव का ध्यान तो भन्ग हो गया पर शिव को बहुत क्रोध आ गया व शिव ने अपना तीसरा नेत्र खोल कर कामदेव को भस्म कर दिया तथा रति को भी अपने पति की मृत्यु पर क्रोध आ गया तो रति ने पार्वती को श्राप दिया कि पार्वती के पेट से कोई भी पु्त्र जन्म नही लेगा। यह श्राप सुनकर पार्वती दुखी हो गयी व शिव ने पार्वती को समझाकर कि उसे दुखी नही होना चाहिये तथा शिव ने पार्वती से विवाह किया। जब देवताओं ने इस श्राप के बारे मे तथा कामदेव के भस्म होने के बारे मे सुना तो वह बड़े व्याकुल हो गये तो देवो ने छल से तारकासुर को वरदान दिलाया कि तारकासुर का वध केवल शिव से जन्मा पुत्र ही कर सकता है। फिर शिव ने कामदेव को ज़िन्दा किया तथा कार्तिकेय ने तारकासुर का वध किया।
